Art Expo 2016

April 15-17, Pier 94 hosted it’s annual Art Expo, exhibiting over 800 artists either with representing galleries or individuals. It is one the best art events to attend to discover new talent and emerging artist. This is my 3rd year attending the exhibit. I went on the last day at 2pm and spent 3 hours browsing around. It is both exhilarating and visually overwhelming, but nonetheless inspiring.

Below are some images I captured of my favorite highlights of the event.

Alfredo Palmero, represented by Gallery Onk. I loved the combination or realist portraits with abstract ink spatters to make the dress. It’s romantic and modern, simple and complex.

Julia Carter’s happy art and patterns drew me in because I closely associated with the style and it actually inspired me to take my patterns and happy illustrations from the screen and onto the canvas. So keep a look out for that soon to come. Her colors, use of white space, and the hidden inspiring messages are no doubt mood boosters. She says “my paintings are landscape of the soul” and I totally agree.

Rodo Padilla’s adorable characters remind me of my mushroom characters. I have a fascination with chubby babies and dogs. It has a low brow quality that is adorable and slightly morbid all at once.

I want this in my house. These amazing installations are made of tiny metal butterflies or birds pinned to a canvas and painted. It looks amazing in person.

Doesn’t this look like something from a Tim Burton movie? This artist creates these “Prayer machines” mobiles that actually move and create magical shadows as well.

These pop culture painting are made from a printed photographs of models that are then collages with vintage comic books, pretty cool.

Seriously, how gorgeous is this? From what I understood, this is a photograph of a flowers petals wrapped around a wire or something.
